Martha Ann Holt, affectionately known as "Mother Holt," was a formidable force in both music and community, born on September 19, 1934, in Columbus, Ohio. She departed from this world on March 9, 2025, leaving behind a legacy steeped in faith, love, and the unforgettable sound of her voice.
Throughout her life, Martha was dedicated to her craft as a Gospel Recording Artist with the esteemed Bernard Upshaw Singers and served for over 50 years with the Simultaneous Revival Choir, also the director of the Holt singers which was composed of her four children. Her unwavering commitment to her music reflected her profound relationship with the Lord, and her church, the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, was the center of her universe. A graduate of South High School and Eastern Union Bible College, Martha was not just a talented musician; she was also a admired piano music teacher who inspired countless students with her passion.
Martha's personality was a powerful blend of strength and compassion. She was known for her loving heart, her steadfast opinions, and her unwavering support for her family and friends. She had an extraordinary ability to blend seriousness with joy, often finding laughter in life's moments while maintaining a backup plan with her ever-present gun by her side. An opinionated matriarch, she was unyielding in her principles, reminding everyone around her of the importance of faith and family.
Her proudest accomplishments were decorated with accolades, including her induction into the Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio, for her contributions to gospel music, and her membership in the Eastern Star organizations.
Martha is survived by her beloved daughters, Martha Holt Jr., Cynthia Hale, and Lillie (Roy) Bell; her dear sister, Mary Louise Simon; her brother, William Thomas Cassells; her grandchildren, Tanika Blair, Tramaine Blair, Jerrell Blair, Byron McCarroll, and Tiesha Williams; numerous additional grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of cherished godchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rufus Staples; mother, Bessie Mae Staples; her late husband, Robert Lee Holt Jr.; her sons, Clayton Lee Jackson Jr. and Robert Anthony Holt; her sister, Clara Ruth Staples; her nephew, Carlos Dequin Staples; her son-in-law, Terrance Hale; and her brother-in-law, Walter Simon.
Martha Ann Holt's life was a testament to faith, strength, and music-a legacy that will continue to resonate through those she left behind. Services to honor her remarkable journey will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northeast in Columbus, Ohio, on March 21, 2025, beginning with a viewing at 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. Her presence in the lives she touched will forever be cherished.
