Martha Jean Haverstick (Field) Kay passed away on April 20, 2011 at the age of 88 years. Born and raised in Indianapolis by Charlotte and Earl Haverstick, Martha attended Shortridge High School where she was daily editor of the school paper. At DePauw University she became the first female editor of the school newspaper, was elected class president, and graduated with honors in the Class of 1945. In her professional life, she was the office manager of Scott Foresman Company until her retirement in 1983. Martha was an active member of P.E.O. for 47 years.
Martha considered her greatest accomplishment in life, however, to be her four children, Carol Field (Phil), Betsy Connor (Hilary), Marcia Stout and Dan Field (Kathy), and devoted her love and attention to them. During their childhoods, she made her children's Easter outfits and prom dresses, reupholstered furniture, led scout troops, taught Sunday School, knit fisherman sweaters, made remarkable pies and Christmas cookies, and crossed the country many times in an unreliable Plymouth station wagon on 4-week family camping trips, all with love, patience and fortitude.
On retirement to Hobe Sound, FL Martha continued her avid pursuit of bridge, tennis and golf, and also enjoyed playing cards and other games with her young grandchildren, even teaching them to drive a golf cart in a less reckless manner than they would have liked.
Martha spent her final years very happily at Friendship Village of Columbus, OH close to her daughter Marcia. The new friendships made there were a source of deep satisfaction for her. She volunteered to meet new residents and then write short bios for the community newsletter, following her own guidelines to write about only the best and finest aspects of each person. She was an avid bridge player, a member of the writers' group, on the library committee, and played in the chimers group.
A memorial service will be held in the Community Room at Friendship Village at 2:00 PM Friday, April 29, 2011. Family burial service at Union Chapel Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN at 2 p.m. on April 30th.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Friendship Village of Columbus, Development Office, 5800 Forest Hills Blvd, Columbus, OH 43231, or to a charity of choice.
