Marvin (“Marv”) James Harrop passed away May 14, 2024 with his family by his side following a brief illness. Marv lived a charmed life with his surviving wife of 62 years, Glenda and devoted sons Perry (JoAnne) and Todd (Julie). He was also the proud grandfather of Kelly, Katie and Ashley Harrop.
Marv was a car enthusiast, enjoyed sports (playing, coaching, and watching), and big band music. Marv was also quite the handyman. If something was broken, no worries, just put it on the work bench and he would fix it.
Marv was born in Chicago where he spent eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. While in Chicago, he worked in insurance before moving to Pittsburgh in 1974 when he purchased an Interstate Batteries franchise. After running the business for nearly two decades, Marv and Glenda began their journey south to enjoy their retirement years and much desired warm weather. They quickly embraced country music with these years best characterized by Shenandoah’s song, “Next to You, Next to Me”. First stop was a lake house in Georgia before moving to a retirement community in Florida. While in Florida, Marv enjoyed playing softball and became an avid golfer hitting the links weekly with his buddies Ron, Bernie, and George. They were the perfect foursome on the fairway, not too serious, just having fun. In his later years, he was diagnosed with macular degeneration which greatly affected his sight, but never his vision, as he never lost his ability to give directions with the utmost precision.
