Mary Ellen Cerny

January 23, 1943 — February 5, 2025

Mary Ellen Cerny, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother,  and friend, departed this world on February 5, 2025, at the age of 82 in Columbus, Ohio. Born on January 23, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio, Mary Ellen's life was filled with love, laughter, and warmth, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Mary Ellen made the best egg salad, chocolate milkshakes, scrambled eggs, and turkey stuffing imaginable. Family and friends were always welcome at her table, where they were treated to meals made with care and accompanied by her signature brand of humor, never leaving without leftovers. Sleepovers at Grammy's were cherished traditions, filled with laughter, stories, and lots of goodies.

Educated at St. Timothy Elementary School and Ursuline High School, Mary Ellen brought her vibrant personality into every facet of her life. She was beautiful, hilarious, sassy, and sarcastic, yet filled with love and care for everyone around her. Always the first person to check in on her loved ones, her thoughtfulness shone brightly through the many life events she celebrated with those she loved.

A proud mother to Diane (Phil) Barcus, Mary Beth (Rob) Corron, and Tom (Lisa Doria) Cerny, she took immense joy in her role as a mother. Her heart swelled with pride for her grandchildren—Brandon, Carly (Julian), Lauren, Matthew, Maxton, Caitlin, Kendall, and Taylor—and her great-granddaughters, Sophia and Camila. Mary Ellen's presence brought light wherever she went, attending children’s museums, movies, zoo trips, festivals, fairs, and sporting events, ensuring her grandchildren’s lives were rich with experiences and love.

Mary Ellen was not only a remarkable caregiver; she also had a knack for cultivating friendships. She formed connections with everyone she encountered, from her banker to the grocery bagger and even the community handyman—a testament to her approachable nature and the genuine interest she took in others' lives.

Mary Ellen enjoyed a variety of interests, including putting her heart into her family, indulging in Hallmark movies, and surrounding herself with beautiful flowers. She had a unique collection of Mona Lisa memorabilia, Hummel figurines, and charming Carolers that filled her home with character and warmth.

At her core, Mary Ellen was thought of as a loving mother, cherished deeply by her family, including her faithful grand-dog, Irie. She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Elsie Karnatz, and her brother, Bill Karnatz.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2025, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:30 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, 10051 Brewster Lane, Powell, Ohio.
