Mckinley Mitchell, Jr.

October 9, 1947 — May 2, 2024

McKinley Mitchell Jr. affectionately known to his family as “Sonny” and to his friends and colleagues as “Mitch” was born in Columbus, Ohio on October 9, 1947, to Burnice and McKinley Mitchell Sr. After a long illness he parted this life on May 2, 2024.

He graduated from Columbus East High School in 1966. He attended The Ohio State University for a short time before entering into the United States Air Force. After serving in the United States Air Force, he began a career in State of Ohio Government. He worked for the State Liquor Control as a State Liquor Inspector. Upon retirement from the State of Ohio he began a career in law enforcement as a County Deputy Sherriff. He also did security detail on occasion for his home church of Trinity Baptist Church and also Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.

Sonny was a lover of the great outdoors. Going on many trips to ski, hunting and fishing. He had a love of playing golf as well. He loved to visit with friends and family and could often be found at the East High School gatherings at the Golden Corral. He had a love for literature as well as classical music.

He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Burnice and McKinley Mitchell Sr. His oldest sister, Mackoline Mitchell Brooks.

He is survived by his only immediate relative, his sister Martha D. Mitchell Smith. His nieces and nephews whom he was close to: Tonya Mitchell Smith Burke, Walter “Gene” Brooks, Tiya Brooks Sowell, Dara Brooks and Eric Brooks. Special cousin and caregiver Garriett “Dale” Dennis. Many friends and relatives.
