Melva "Yvonne" Johnson, age 86, passed away early Wednesday morning, May 17, 2023 at Carriage Court Assisted Living Facility in Hilliard, Ohio.
Yvonne was born September 15, 1936 in Vealmoor, Texas to Carl Edell Peterson and Vera Leona (Haney) Peterson.
Yvonne met Clarence Fred "CJ" Johnson of Ashtabula, Ohio while he was stationed at Webb Air Force Base in nearby Big Spring, TX; and they were married in Vealmoor, Texas in May 1958. Yvonne and Clarence moved to Ashtabula, Ohio where they raised their three children: Susan (Phil) Mitchem, Calvin Johnson, and Alan (Penny) Johnson.
Yvonne was intelligent, kind, and helpful. She excelled at gardening, sewing, and feeding the people she loved. Yvonne's gardens were productive and beautiful for her family and for the creatures who lived in them. Yvonne would go on to share her encyclopedic knowledge of songbirds and plants with Nature Club, the Holden Arboretum, and local birdwatchers. She was a loving steward of her environment, and she would never say no to a shared slice of pie with ice cream on top.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Larry Peterson and sister-in-law Charlotte Peterson of Luther, Texas; her husband CJ; her daughter Susan, and son-in-law Phil Mitchem. She is survived by her sons Calvin and Alan; her daughter-in-law Penny; grandchildren David (Miranda) Johnson, Victoria Mitchem, Bethany (Sam) McCormick, Zach (Lynn) Johnson, Sean (Olivia) Mitchem, Amy Johnson, and Noah Johnson; and great-grandchildren Ben Johnson and Eli Johnson.
Friends may call at the NEWCOMER SOUTHWEST CHAPEL 3393 Broadway, Grove City, Ohio 43123 on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 from 6:00pm until time of memorial service at 7:00pm.
