Mercy Rejoice Abla Asempa was born on January 26, 1944 in Keta in the Volta Region of Ghana. Her father was Emmanuel Asempa of Peki Dzake, and her mother was Constance Amedofu Agbakpe of Anloga. She was the 3rd of the 14 siblings. She began her education at the Peki Dzake Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Primary School and went on from there to the Peki Dzake EP Middle School. During this time she lived with her Auntie, Madam Selina Yawa Asempa.
By dint of hard work in the Middle School, she gained admission into the Universal Commercial College in Somanya, Eastern Region Ghana from which she received a School Certificate in 1964. Shortly after that her father, Mr. Emmanuel Asempa arranged for her to stay with the Nyomi family in Nkoranza in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. There she expressed interest in becoming a teacher. So, she gained admission into the Women's Teacher Training College in Begoro in the Eastern region of Ghana. While in Begoro, she spent some of her vacation times in Nkoranza. She received her Certificate A as a Teacher on completion of the Training College in 1969.
She began an illustrious teaching career in Ada in the Greater Accra Region where she taught for three years and then moved to teach in Teshie in the Accra metropolis for another 33 years. She was much loved by her students. Her hard work earned her promotions in the Ghana Education Service until she became a Principal Superintendent, the position on which she retired in the year 2004.
Ms. Mercy Asempa met Mr. Frederick Kwaku Tettey during a visit he made to her sister (Mrs Victoria Nyomi) in Nkoranza in the late 1960s. That visit resulted in a love affair that led to a life-long partnership which was formalized traditionally on April 19, 1971. She gave birth to Pamela Tettey, Frederick Nuku Tettey, and Eleanor Tettey. Her son, Nuku (1975 – 2003) pre-deceased her.
During the latter part of the first decade of the 21st Century her health began to deteriorate. His daughters, Pamela and Eleanor took care of her and did everything possible to get the best possible care for her. To further give Mercy Asempa access to better health care, the daughter, Pamela, invited her to Columbus, Ohio in the USA. She arrived in February 2010 and spent the rest of her life (almost 11 years) with her daughter and her family in the Columbus area.
Mercy Asempa breathed her last in the afternoon of January 8, 2022 – just two and half weeks before her seventy-eighth birthday. She is survived by her beloved daughters, Pamela and Eleanor, as well as two grandchildren Seyram Tettey and Nunana Tettey.
