Michael R. (Mike) Wantz, 72, of Columbus, Ohio passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022.
Mike was born May 28, 1949, in Massillon, Ohio to James and F. Eldora (Rich) Wantz.
Mike attended Kent State University, ultimately attaining the degree of Master of Library Science. He began his career with the Medina County District Library. In 1988, he accepted the position of Director of the Perry County District Library, where he was instrumental in the expansion and modernization of that library system. Mike retired from the Perry County Library as Executive Director in 2009.
Mike was a voracious reader and was constantly researching his various areas of interest which included history, architecture, engineering, art, and mid-century design. He also had interests in various sports including basketball, auto racing and fly fishing.
Mike and his wife Susan, retired to Savannah Georgia in 2009, where they embraced their love of animals and beach life. They worked with various rescue agencies and fostered (often adopted) many dogs in their home. Eventually they chose to return to Ohio, with their grandchildren. They had the last 5 years in Columbus closest to those they cared about most. Mike's wife of 52 years, Susan Wantz, preceded him passing away earlier the very same day.
Mike will be deeply missed by his daughter and son-in-law, Maggie Wantz-Egbert and John Egbert, grandchildren Harley and Lydia Egbert and brothers John Wantz of Lakewood, Ohio and Jim Wantz of Cumming, Georgia, and their families.
