Nelda J. Smith

Nelda Smith (Swain), 87, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025, in Canal Winchester, Ohio. Born on April 30, 1937, in Crown City, Ohio, she lived a life filled with love and devotion to her family.

Nelda was the beloved wife of Maurice “Sonny” Smith for 69 years until his passing. She was a cherished mother to her daughter, Vicki (Steve) Anderson, and a devoted grandmother to Devon (Scott) Schaffran. Her love extended to her great-grandson, Avery Schaffran, who brought her immense joy. Nelda is also survived by her brother, Verlin (Joanne) Swain, and sister-in-law, Evelyn Swain, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Bessie (Dillion) Swain: her sisters, Naomi Gooderham, Bertha Mae Bickel, Aldean Mille, and Wanda Scarbrough: and her bothers Paul Swain, Orman Swain and twin brother Nelson Swain.

Nelda was known as a loving wife, mother, and “Mammaw”, roles she embraced wholeheartedly. Her warmth and kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Visitation will be held Saturday, February 22, 20205, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Madison Christian Church, located at 3565 Bixby Rd, Groveport, Ohio. A memorial service will follow at the same location from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. A lunch gathering will take place immediately after the service in the church Fireside Room.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Madison Christian Church Worship Center Remodel Fund in Nelda’s memory.

Her love and legacy will be cherished always.
