Norman Carl Hitzeman

February 5, 1939 — December 4, 2024

Norman Carl Hitzeman, affectionately known as Norm, was born on February 5, 1939, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After a life devoted to his family, career, and faith, he passed away peacefully on December 4,2024, in Powell, Ohio.

Norm's 30-year career as the Human Resources Director American Electric Power was marked by his dedication and passion for nurturing the workforce and cultivating a supportive environment for employees. His educational journey began at Concordia Lutheran High School, where he ignited his love for learning, which would lead him to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Concordia Teacher's College in Illinois, followed by a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Beyond his career in human resources, he also touched the lives of many as a teacher and principal at Concordia Lutheran Church in Illinois, leaving an indelible mark on both students and staff alike. His love of ice cream led him to his first job as a teenager at Dairy Queen in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Norm was a man of values, believing deeply that it is better to be loving than to be right. This philosophy guided him throughout his life, shaping him into the perfect father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His commitment to his family was unwavering; he loved them fiercely and consistently demonstrated that love through his actions. He was a cherished member of the Living Word Lutheran Church in Galena, Ohio, where he not only participated but led by example as a devoted Christian man.

A man of many interests, Norm found joy in Indiana basketball and had a passion for walking, seeking out opportunities to stay active. He and his beloved wife, Marcia, who shared 63 wonderful years together, loved to travel, spending winters in Destin, Florida, and enjoying memorable trips to the picturesque New England states.

His gentle spirit was complemented by a firm handshake, a hallmark of his pleasant personality. Norm was kind, patient, and loving, known for his great sense of humor that brought smiles to all who encountered him. Norm's proudest accomplishments extended beyond his professional life; he volunteered for Meals on Wheels and served as a Chaplain at Riverside Hospital, caring for those in need and providing solace to patients and their families.

Norm is survived by his devoted wife, Marcia, and his loving children: daughter Cheryl (Scott) Sanders, daughter Julie (Tom) Ramey, and son Brad (Janice) Hitzeman. He is also survived by his grandchildren—Colton and Carter Sanders, Haley (Justin) Smith, Samuel (Maddie) Ramey, Madison and Jack Hitzeman—and his great-grandchild, Judah Smith. When grandchildren visited, they would sprint to him at the airport for his big hug.

He leaves behind a brother, James (Lynn) Hitzeman, as well as several nieces and nephews who will miss his warmth and laughter.

Norm was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Caroline (Kuhl) Hitzeman, who instilled in him the values of kindness and service that he carried throughout his life.

As we remember Norm, we celebrate a life beautifully lived—a man who loved deeply, served selflessly, and made the world a brighter place through his kindness and love. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. His beloved son in law would comment that "If Norm doesn't get into Heaven, no one will."

The family will hold a private memorial at a later date.
