Peter G. Homorody

Peter G. Homorody, 84, of Lewis Center, Ohio passed away peacefully on March 30, 2023 after a fierce battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma.

Peter was born on May 8, 1938 to Bela and Katalin Homorody in Budapest, Hungary. He came to the US in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution to escape the Russian occupation of his country. After a brief stay at a refugee camp in Austria, he immigrated to Cleveland with only the clothes on his back and soon was joined by his brother, Gabor. He then moved to Columbus where he began college at The Ohio State University and served as captain of the fencing team. In the middle of his tenure at The Ohio State University, he joined the US Army and served in Alaska before returning to finish his bachelor's degree in architecture.

Peter worked at a few architecture firms during his career, eventually retiring from Ohio Bureau of Worker's Compensation in 2002 where he made lifelong friends that he continued to meet for birthday lunches at his favorite restaurant, Japanese Steakhouse, among others throughout his retirement years.

While at The Ohio State University he met his dear wife, Lynda, and they married on June 13, 1965. They had two sons, Darren and Jason. Peter and Lynda lived life as true partners enjoying travel, gardening, and feeding birds and animals in their backyard. Peter shared a love for music with his older son, Darren and shared a love of tennis with his younger son, Jason.

Peter and his family had a passion for playing and watching tennis throughout his life. Peter was an active and respected member of the Columbus, Ohio tennis community for most of his life. Peter and his son, Jason played tennis together throughout the years on the National Father and Son tennis circuit, which culminated in winning the "golden slam" as they were victorious in tournaments in California, New York, and Florida when Peter was 80 years old and Jason was 45.

During Peter's retirement years he greatly enjoyed attending his granddaughters' sporting, choir, drama and orchestra events. One of Peter's greatest joys was being a grandfather to Casey and Bella Homorody and Kristen (Lengel) Thompson. He also spent 16 gratifying years as assistant coach for Men's and Women's tennis at Denison University where he was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009. Most recently he has spent 3 wonderful years as assistant coach for Ohio Wesleyan University Men's and Women's tennis teams. During his years coaching he earned the endearing nickname "H-rod". The coaches and players appreciated the colorful manner in which Peter delivered coaching advice by utilizing various swear words in an endearing yet effective way. He had a profound impact on the players and fellow coaches which resulted in an unbelievable outpouring of support for Peter during his hard-fought battle with cancer.

Peter was an awesome dude who is loved by all and will be truly missed.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, Bela and Katalin Homorody. He is survived by his wife Lynda, sons Darren (Cathy Griffis) Homorody, Jason (Stephanie) Homorody, granddaughters Kristen (Lengel) Thompson, Casey Homorody and Bella Homorody, his beloved brother Gabor (Hannelore) Homorody and nephews Thomas Homorody, Gabor Homorody, and Marcus Homorody.

Visitation will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home (Northwest Chapel) on Brewster Lane on Friday, April 7, 2023 from 3-6pm with eulogy and story sharing from 6-7pm. Family and friends are welcome to meet at Kingwood Memorial Park in Lewis Center at the Chapel of Light Mausoleum for a brief funeral service at 10am on Saturday, April 8, 2023.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kobacker House who took great care of Peter and our family during his final days. The thoughtful and compassionate care provided by the doctors, nurses and volunteers was appreciated by our family and will always be remembered.
