Phyllis Ann McClain Barnes, age 88, unexpectantly passed from this life on May 16, 2021, and into the waiting arms of her Lord and loved ones who passed before her.
Phyllis was born on April 20, 1933, to Mary E. Fletcher and Raymond K. Fletcher of Ross Township, Green County, OH, where she was greeted by her two older brothers Raymond (Ray) and Ruliff (Rudy).
Phyllis was a 1951 graduate of Ross Township H.S. in Green County. After graduating, she worked in Dayton, OH, for the E.A. Kinsey Company and then the Mead Corp. She would later work for more than 40 years in Federal Civil Service, eventually retiring as the executive secretary to the Commander of Rickenbacker AFB.
On July 30, 1960, Phyllis wed Airman George Richard (Dick) McClain. On January 26, 1962, when living in San Antonio, TX, they welcomed their daughter, Melanie Lynn. Daughter Janel Rae was born on July 18, 1965, in the Panama Canal Zone.
While stationed with her husband in the Air Force, the family made their home in several places, including Washington, D.C.; San Antonio, TX; Panama Canal Zone, Panama; Amarillo, TX; Minot, ND; Xenia, OH; and Grove City, OH. Phyllis was a resident of Grove City for more than 47 years.
Several years after Dick's 1986 passing, Phyllis was blessed to have met John George (George) Barnes, Jr. They married in 1997 and remained together until his passing in October 2000.
Phyllis grew up in the Friends Church in Jamestown, OH, and was a member of the Grove City United Methodist Church at the time of her passing. In her many years of serving God in churches across the U.S., she especially enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher and overseeing every detail of various children's Christmas pageants.
Family and friends will forever remember Phyllis as always being "totally put together" with her perfectly matched ensembles (including matching lipstick, fingernail polish, and jewelry) and her pristinely coiffed hairdos. Her daughters would tease her for putting on her make-up and wearing matching clothes even if she was only going out to work in the yard.
Phyllis is predeceased by her parents, Raymond and Mary Fletcher; brothers, Ray and Rudy; husbands, Dick McClain and George Barnes; and daughter, Janel R. (McClain) Rochester. She is survived by her daughter, Melanie McClain Warner (Jeffrey), of Grove City; her grandsons, Matthew McClain Warner, of Kansas City, MO; and Mason Kincaid Warner, of Columbus, OH.; and former son-in-law, Michael Rochester, of Arizona.
The family offers special thanks to Capital City Hospice, who provided such loving care and attention to Phyllis over the past six months and for their round-the-clock care in the days leading to her passing.
A private family burial will occur at a later date at Greenlawn Cemetery in South Charleston, OH. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to Capital City Hospice Hope Foundation, 2800 Corporate Exchange Drive, Suite 170, Columbus, OH 43231.
