Ray Gordon Adkins Sr.
June 19, 1930 — February 17, 2021
Ray Gordon Adkins Sr. passed away peacefully on February 17, 2021. While we are grieving our loss, we are comforted in knowing that he is now with his beloved wife of almost 64 years, Helen Marie Adkins. He was born on June 19, 1930 in Wheelersburg, Ohio to Rhoda (Eldridge) and Robert Adkins.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen M. Adkins; sisters, Gladys Howard, Betty Parker, Rosemary Parker; step sister, Frances Conkel; step brother, Joel Eldridge; best friends, Ed and Naomi Bowman; and parents, Rhoda and Robert Adkins.
Ray is survived by his daughter, Sandra Hood; son, Ray (Nettie) Adkins Jr.; grandchildren, Teresa (Derek) Wilson; Ray (Sharon) Adkins III, Michael (Angie) Adkins, Angela (Michael) Capo, Robert (Halie) Hood; great grandchildren, Logan Adkins, Mackenzie Wilson, Gianna Capo, Annie Hood, Eleanor Hood; half brother, Karl Adkins; numerous nieces, nephews, and other good friends.
Family was the most important thing to him and Ray was the happiest when his family was all gathered together. His wife and children were treated to incredible vacations including a 3 week road trip to California to see Disneyland! He loved spending time with his grandchildren, taking them on regular outings to amusement parks and he was later overjoyed with the birth of his 5 great grandchildren, who affectionately called him Pap. Ray was known for his generous spirit and kind heart. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help someone in need. He could fix anything and his skills were frequently called upon. He believed in giving to organizations and activities that supported children or those less fortunate. He and Helen taught this important lesson to their family and to this day, we never walk past a Salvation Army Collection bucket without making a donation.
Ray started working at a very young age and those work experiences have led to many wonderful stories which we all wish we could hear at least one more time. He was a proud Veteran of the United States Army and served an 18 month tour of duty in Japan. He was a member of Teamster Local 413 and drove over a million miles in his lifetime. After retirement, he and Helen spent most of their time traveling across the United States, with their favorite spots being Disney World, Hawaii, Key West, and any place without snow.
Our family would like to thank Dr. Frank Tice for his dedicated care of our father and grandfather. We are forever grateful that we were given the gift of the last 25 years with this beloved patriarch of our family.
Out of respect for the health and safety of our friends and family, we are limiting the funeral service to members of the immediate family. While we would love to share this celebration of Ray's life, we feel it would be inappropriate to place you at risk.
