In Richards's spare time he enjoyed bowling, playing cards, playing the guitar, fishing, traveling and watching old movies with his wife Amanda. One of the endearing qualities of Richard was that he would help anyone who was in need. No matter what he had if you needed it, he would give it to you. Richard was an active member of the Hilltop Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for over 45 years, where he served as an Elder for many of those years. He loved going out in the Field Ministry with his wife Amanda. Richard had a burning desire in him to preach to everyone who he came into contact with. He wanted to share the Good News of the Bible and the wonderful future hope that Jehovah God has in store for all of mankind.
