Richard J. Schuler

March 19, 1953 — September 29, 2024

Delaware

In Memory of Richard J Schuler

Richard J Schuler, 71, died Sunday night, September 29, 2024, in Delaware, Ohio, with his loving wife and two sons by his side.

Rich was born on March 19, 1953, in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of Lawrence E. Schuler and M. Denise Kailholz Schuler.

Rich attended The Ohio State University on an ROTC scholarship, graduating with a degree in Political Science in 1975. He enlisted in the US Navy proudly serving his country from 1975–1981 as a pilot and plane commander flying P-3 airplanes that searched for submarines. After leaving active duty, he joined the US Naval Reserve from 1982–1986 retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Rich met his wife, Cheryl, after being set up on a date by his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jo and Mike. Rich and Cheryl were married May 28, 1983, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. They celebrated 41 wonderful years of marriage together. The highlight of their marriage was raising their sons Ritchie and Danny. Their hearts and highlights grew as they welcomed Ashley and Erin into the family which led to the ultimate joy of becoming Grampy and Grammy to five beautiful grandkids.

Rich joined the family business, Schuler Heating & Cooling Inc. from 1985–2008. Rich learned how to estimate jobs from his father. When their dad retired, Rich and his brother Mike worked together to run the business. Rich was a trustee for the Sheet Metal Workers Pension Fund and the Health & Welfare Fund. Rich also would work for his sister, Marilyn, at ME Carrocce & Company helping out during tax season. In 2008, Rich was employed by E & S Construction Engineers and worked with his brother Larry on a project near New York City. Rich continued to work various projects for E & S Construction until his retirement in 2018. With the boys grown, Rich and Cheryl enjoyed traveling and exploring each new job location.

Rich and Cheryl built their forever home in Canfield, Ohio, surrounded by land, woods and “the lake” out in the country. The boys attended South Range Schools, and no matter what they were involved in, Rich was always there cheering for them and their friends. Rich was a member and Deacon of Greenford Christian Church. Rich loved flying and maintained his private pilot’s license while his dad was alive. He was qualified as a flight instructor and taught his sister, Mary Lou, how to fly. Rich and Cheryl even borrowed his dad’s plane to fly out west to Yellowstone and the Tetons for their honeymoon. Rich enjoyed all sports, but Buckeye football games were always special with family and friends. Shortly after Rich retired, it was time to move to Delaware, Ohio, to be close to his sons and their families. He loved to travel, hike in the woods, and do anything with his boys. His most recent joy was watching his grandkids grow and hearing them call him Grampy. He was generous with his time, putting others first, and his family and friends will always remember the brightness of his smile and the warmth of his infectious laugh.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, the former Cheryl Wynn; his son, Richard (Ashley) Schuler; his son Daniel (Erin) Schuler; his grandchildren, Adalynn, Blake, Cecilia, Danny, and Maren. He leaves behind his brothers and sisters, Denise (Patrick) Colucci, Helene (Tim) Dwyer, Patti Ann (Rich) Graziosi, Larry (Jeri) Schuler, Mary Lou (Sam) Carbon, David Schuler, Marilyn (Paul) Carrocce, and Ed (Patsy) Schuler. He leaves his in-laws, Mike (Kathie) Lovrinoff, Joyce Schuler, Sandy (Ray) Saavedra, Donna (Rick) Fox, Gary Wynn and many nieces and nephews.

Rich was preceded in death by his parents, his wife’s parents, Don and Charlotte Wynn, his sister, Mary Jo Lovrinoff, his brother, Michael Schuler, and sister-in-law, Pam Schuler.
