Richard T. Southall

November 23, 1937 — December 16, 2024

Westerville

Richard Thomas Southall, 87, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on December 16, 2024. He was born on November 23, 1937, at White Cross Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, to Albert and Elizabeth (Thompson) Southall.

Richard graduated from Linden-McKinley High School in 1955 and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1964. As a Lance Corporal, he was a dedicated member of the 4th Marine Regiment, stationed in Okinawa under the 4th Marine Corps District. Richard took immense pride in his service, exemplifying the Marine Corps values of honor, courage, and commitment throughout his life.

A passionate sports fan, Richard excelled in football, basketball, and baseball during high school, earning varsity letters in all three. He was also an accomplished water skier, spending much of his younger years on the water. Richard enjoyed teaching friends and family to ski and took great care of his boats and vehicles, especially his many Ford trucks. Richard also enjoyed playing and watching billiards

Richard was a devoted father and grandfather, never missing weekly visits with his daughter and later with his granddaughters, creating cherished memories for his family.

He worked as a track dispatcher for Conrail until his retirement in 2000 and maintained close friendships with his colleagues for years afterward.

In his later years, Richard found joy in watching sports, shopping for Ford trucks, taking walks at Sharon Woods, evaluating real estate properties, and spending time with Yorkshire Terriers. He had a fondness for meals at MCL Cafeteria and Wendy’s, particularly enjoying chili “off the bottom” paired with a Frosty. Bargain hunting, music, driving, and frequent trips to Meijer were among his favorite pastimes.

Richard will be deeply missed by his loving family and all who knew him. He is survived by his daughter, Mary; his granddaughters, Kaci (Nick) and Olivia (Steven); and his great-granddaughters, Rosalie, Ellie, and Baby Girl Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Ron Southall.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Elizabeth Southall; his brothers, Jack and Jim; and his sisters, Wanda and Sharon.

Richard’s life was a testament to love, dedication, and the joy of sharing life with family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories and a life well-lived.
