With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Robert Abugbilla Agunga, who peacefully departed this life on March 10, 2025, in Grove City, Ohio, at the age of 73.
Dr. Agunga was born on July 6, 1951, in Kula, a small village near Bawku, Ghana. From humble beginnings, he pursued his passion for education and research, earning a PhD as a research scholar in developmental studies, and dedicating his life to advancing agricultural development. His career took him around the world as a passionate advocate for the Ohio State Agricultural Program, where he worked tirelessly to improve farming practices and support communities globally. Dr. Agunga was the first African Professor to ever work in the Ohio State Agricultural Department.
Dr. Agunga lived in Ghana, Iowa, and Ohio, but his impact was felt far beyond those places. His deep love for agriculture and farming, combined with his passion for third-world development research, meeting new people, gardening, and photography, made him a beacon of inspiration and an unforgettable personality.
Dr. Agunga was known around the world for his kindness, gentle spirit, and unwavering work ethic. He was a man who could relate to people from all cultures and walks of life. He dedicated his life to his family. His greatest joy was raising his four children, ensuring they had opportunities for success and happiness.
He lived by the values of family, love, and care for others, always prioritizing the well-being of those around him. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched.
Dr. Agunga is survived by his beloved wife, Rita Agunga, and their cherished children: Amy Agunga, Rachel (Vinson) Agunga, Michael Agunga Jr, and Rebecca Agunga, as well as his granddaughter, Pierce Vinson. He leaves behind a network of extended family, dear friends, and colleagues who will forever hold him in their hearts.
A public funeral service will be held to honor Dr. Agunga’s life on March 22, 2025, at: 3393 Broadway, Grove City, OH 43123
