Robert Childs Sr., 90, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away December 19, 2020 after a brief illness in OSU Hospitals.
He was born in El Dorado, AR on October 1, 1930 to the late Bruce and Linnie (Elerson) Childs Sr.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Bettie A. Childs; sister, Martha Island; brothers, Bruce Childs Jr., Leon Childs; brother-in-law, Willie Island of Los Angeles, CA.
Surviving family includes children, Robert (Donna) Childs, Jr., G. Yvonne Allen, Richard Childs, Jacqueline Childs; grandchildren, Celia R. (Christopher) Allen-Evans, Kelley M. Childs, Amber M. (Larry) Moore, Joy G. Childs, Daniel N. Bohanna, Carlos Childs; great grandchildren, Allen Christopher Evans, Aria Celeste Evans, Mitchell D. Moore, Madison D. Moore; brother, Jimmy Joe (Geraldine) Childs of West Covina, CA.; sisters-in-laws, Henrietta and Lois Childs of Los Angeles, CA; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Robert was born in El Dorado, Arkansas as the second eldest of five children and graduated from Washington High School in 1949.
He later attended Arkansas Baptist College and then graduated from Bliss College, Columbus Ohio, receiving a Bachelor in Commerce in 1963.
Robert served in the United States Air Force as a military police officer during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955.
He was employed at Battelle Memorial Institute for 38 years, where he did mechanical drawing and blue print reading.
Robert served for 25 years as trustee at Second Community Church and a member of the Sanctuary Choir.
He enjoyed playing ping-pong so much that he often achieved recognition as a champion.
Robert was a longtime participant of the Active Older Adults (AOA) of the Eastside Y of Columbus.
Robert was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather; and will be truly missed by all.
The family would like to give a special thanks to everyone for their calls, prayers, and support; especially his Californian family.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 30th, 2020 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Second Community Church, 311 South Highland Ave, Columbus Ohio 43223, with a Homegoing Service immediately following. Burial will take place at Glen Rest Memorial Gardens, 8029 East Main Street, Reynoldsburg, OH - 43068.
Church guidelines: Mask required at all times; No more than 55-60 people; three people to a pew; every other pew unless you're from the same household
