Robert Lee Massey (“Bob”), 93, peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at his home in Alexandria, Ohio. Bob was born on September 14, 1931, in Marietta, Ohio, to Parents John Edward Massey and Florence Pearl (Brothers) Massey. Bob was married for 70 years to the love of his life, Peggy (Weekley) Massey. Bob is survived by his Wife, Peggy; Daughters Rita Massey-Myer (Claude); Rhonda Pettit (David); Renee Starkey (Michael Galasso); and Myrna Brooks (David). Bob is also survived by his Brother, Roger Massey (Bonnie); Granddaughter, Denise Wolfe (Adam); and two Great-grandsons, Asher Wolfe and Oliver Wolfe.
Bob was preceded in death by his Father, John Edward Massey; Mother, Florence Pearl Massey; Son, Randall Curtis Massey; Brother, John William Massey; and Sisters, Monna Massey, Mary Singer, and Myrna Rouhana.
Bob was a gifted cabinetmaker and master woodworker for most of his life, building fine furniture, refinishing furniture, and restoring antiques. He was an expert in furniture touch-up and repair. Having grown up in his father’s woodshop, he was able to pass down to his son, Randy, the skills his father had taught him. When Bob started out on his own, he opened an auto body shop in Bellaire, Ohio. Soon after, he returned to woodworking, opening a furniture refinishing shop in Columbus, Ohio. Bob and Peggy also had a woodshop in Berlin Heights, Ohio for many years, and, after moving to Alexandria in 1990, they opened Woodmasters, where Bob worked until he sold the business and retired. Bob loved living and working in Alexandria, and he made many dear friends during the 35 years he and Peggy called Alexandria home.
Bob was a born-again Christian. He loved reading the Bible, and he received comfort from God’s Word during difficult times. Because of God’s irrevocable promise to him of eternal life, Bob knew at his passing he would go home to be with the Lord and be reunited with his family who had gone before him. Bob and Peggy were members at Pataskala Church of Christ for many years.
Bob had many passions. He raced stock cars in his youth, and he loved to hunt and fish. For many years, he roamed the hills of eastern Ohio (“down home”), hunting and fishing with friends and family. In the early 1990s, Bob visited Jackson Hole, Wyoming for the first time, and he was immediately captivated by the indescribable beauty of the area. He and Peggy went back to Jackson Hole many times, and Bob became an avid fly fisherman. His favorite fishing spot is Oxbow Bend on the Snake River, in Grand Teton National Park, where he joyfully spent countless hours. Bob also loved country music, and he especially loved Neal McCoy, whom he saw in concert many times and had the privilege of meeting on two occasions. Also, anyone who knew Bob was familiar with his love of (and knack for) gardening. Wherever they lived over the years, Bob and Peggy always had gorgeous flowerbeds and robust vegetable gardens. One summer in Alexandria, they had a volunteer tomato plant that grew to cover their entire deck! Bob also loved animals, and he and Peggy had many beloved pets over the years, most of whom were strays they brought into their home to love and care for. More than anything, Bob loved his family, most of all Peggy, who was his loving caregiver for many years.
Bob was loved by all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed.
The family would like to invite all who knew him to celebrate Bob’s life at a memorial service on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Alexandria Church of Christ, 5380 Moots Run Road, Alexandria, Ohio 43001, at 11:00 a.m. Calling hours are 10:00-11:00 a.m., just prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to honor Bob’s wish to continue Peggy's care in their home. If you wish to donate, you may use the link below, or you may purchase Wal-Mart or Kroger gift cards to give to Peggy personally.
