Rosswell (Whitey) Arthur Thomas, 91, departed this earth on Sunday, December 6, 2020. He was born on January 26, 1929 in Columbus, Ohio son of the late Lloyd and Dorothy (Strayer) Thomas. He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Patricia and a baby daughter; second wife Betty; stepdaughter Sandra; brothers (Jack, Robert, Richard and Curtis) and sisters (Betty, Nancy, Mary Jane, and Barbara).
He is survived by his daughters Sandra, Dorothy, Robin, and Melinda (Dan) Staloch, son Ross and stepdaughter Deanna. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was also cherished and loved by many friends including very special friend Jeremy Davis and those from Classics Sports Bar and Sugar Grove Square Apartments in Westerville, Ohio.
He was born just before the great depression and at 10 years of age worked for The Columbus Dispatch selling newspapers to help his family financially. He graduated in 1947 from Linden McKinley High School and became a skilled carpenter. He was a member of the Ohio Carpenters Union #200 and worked heavy construction for 28 years where he helped build many landmarks around the Columbus, Ohio area. Thereafter he was the supervisor of maintenance at Columbus Children's Hospital for 16 years until he retired in 1991.
He lived every day to the fullest and his energy and positive attitude had an impact on everyone he met. He never knew a stranger and was always quick to call you a friend. He had a laugh and a smile that would melt your heart. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, cooking, monthly breakfasts with his high school classmates, traveling, fishing, Ohio State and NFL football games, listening to music and dancing, Bud Light beers, jigsaw puzzles, telling stories of the good old days and his annual birthday parties at Classics Sports Bar.
A private burial is planned, where he will be laid to rest next to his second wife (Betty) at Northlawn Memory Gardens in Westerville, Ohio. A celebration of his life will be held at a future time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Charity Newsies – www.charitynewsies.com (an organization that he supported greatly and who provided clothing to him as a child).
Special thanks to Doug and Lori at Newcomer Funeral Home for handling of burial arrangements and to family friend Jane Hoch for handling of the floral arrangements
