Russell Neal Haley, 93, of Galena, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, December 25, 2023. He was born on August 19, 1930 in Haleyville, Alabama to the late Joe and Lillie (Waldrop) Haley.
Russell is survived by his devoted wife Mary (Anderson) Haley, whom he began dating in 1946. They subsequently married on March 26, 1949 and enjoyed 74 wonderful years together.
Russell was most proud of and loved being a father to his only child and daughter, Joanie Mead, who predeceases him. Russell and Joanie are now reunited, which the family is so thankful for during this time of grief.
Upon concluding his military service with the United States Army, Russell led a long and varied career – beginning with owning and running a long-haul trucking company. He later held the mowing contract with several key United States military bases. Ultimately, and for the vast majority of his career, he focused on heavy construction and engineering, which took him all around the United States and the world - notably Ireland, Japan, and Brazil.
Russell greatly enjoyed stock car racing, working on classic cars, and traveling with Mary. And he never lost his joy for mowing grass, gardening, and yard work, which he loved to do at his and Mary's home up until his passing.
Along with his wife Mary, Russell is also survived by his son-in-law, James Mead; granddaughter, Kimberly (Joseph) Blubaugh; grandson, Jeffrey (Charlie) Mead; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Nettie Rose Cooper; brother, Watson Haley; and many other family members and friends. Russell is additionally preceded in death by his brothers, Simmit, Charles, and Warren Haley.
Per Russell's request, no visitation or funeral services will be held. However, if you wish to honor Russell's life and legacy, please consider a donation to Mount Carmel Hospice (https://www.mountcarmelhealth.com/mount-carmel-foundation).
