Shirley A. Chavis, beloved daughter of the late Dorothy V. Catlin and Joseph B. Wright, departed this life on September 21st, 2022 after a brief illness. Shirley was born November 11th, 1931, in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, the youngest of four daughters. She spent her early years in Monongahela and graduated from Monongahela High School. While growing up she was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. She moved to Washington D.C. and spent a large portion of her life there before relocating to Columbus, Ohio. She was employed in Washington within the federal government including working with naval reactors and within the Atomic Energy Commission. She held other positions within the federal government.
She married and became the mother of one daughter, Judith P. Chavis, who has preceded her in death. She relocated to Columbus, Ohio later in life and became a very active participant in her community, as she had similarly been elsewhere. She was a steadfast member of several historic church organizations during her life. These churches include Bethel AME in Monongahela, Pennsylvania; Asbury United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. which is on the National Register of Historical Places, and the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom; Capitol Hill United Methodist Church (UMC) in Washington, D.C.; and Douglas Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC) in Washington D.C. She has been a strong, supportive member of Broad Street United Methodist Church (UMC) in Columbus, Ohio for the last many years.
She leaves to cherish her memory two nephews, Daniel W. Austin Jr., and James R Joyner Jr.; three nieces, Barbara Anne Jones, Akaya Windwood, and Sherre Washington; one cousin, Dorothy Wright; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Shirley's family will receive friends from 9:00-11:00am, Saturday, Oct 1, 2022 at Broad Street United Methodist Church, 501 E. Broad Street, Columbus, OH. 43215, where a funeral service will begin at 11:00. Entombment to follow at Sunset Cemetery, Galloway, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to Broad Street United Methodist Church in Shirley's honor.
