Shirley May Harris, 80, passed away at home in the loving care of her husband on Sunday, July 24, 2022 in New Albany, Ohio. She was born on September 4, 1941 in Gashland, Missouri to the late Joe and Lois Ilene Adams.
Shirley is preceded in death by cousin, Jay Millen and sister-in-law, Mildred Harris. Shirley is survived by husband of nearly 60 years, Norman Lee Harris; daughter, Sherri (John) Case; son, Troy (Christy) Harris; grandchildren, Sheighley (Jason) Ciotola-Koch, Holly (Charles) Prentice, Ethan Harris, Cade Harris, Elise Harris; cousin, Kaylynn Millen; brother-in-law, Reverend Jay Harris and a host of family and friends.
Shirley graduated from North Kansas City Highschool in 1959. Shirley attended William Jewel College for her freshman year in 1960. During this time she served as Honored Queen of her local Job's Daughters chapter. She then transferred to the University of Central Missouri where she graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Education in 1963. It was during her junior year that she met Norman, who was a senior at the time. The two quickly fell in love and married in August of 1962.
Shirley quickly started her first teaching job at William Chrisman Highschool in Independence, Missouri. She continued teaching until the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Sherri, in December of 1965. Their second child, a son named Troy, was born five years later on Christmas day in 1970.
Shirley was a 50+ year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of Discover Christian Church in Dublin,Ohio. Shirley was President of her bowling club and the Muirfield Garden Club. She and her husband hosted numerous PGA players in their home over the years during the annual Memorial Tournament. She was an active member of the Olentangy Valley Doll Club and a lifetime member of Alpha Gamma Delta.
Shirley and Norman spent as much time as they could during their 60 years of marriage traveling the world. The couple even visited 49 of the 50 states as well as 5 of the 7 continents during their travels. They often tried to include friends and family members on these adventures.
Family will receive friends on Monday, August 1, 2022, from 10:00am to 11:00am at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, Columbus Northeast Chapel, 3047 East Dublin-Granville Road, Columbus, Ohio 43231 with a funeral service immediately following at 11:00am also at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, Columbus Northeast Chapel. She will be laid to rest at Maplewood Cemetery.
