Swapan Roychowdhury

April 10, 1938 — April 3, 2022

Swapan Roychowdhury was born in Kolkata, India on April 10, 1938 as the third of four children. He was known as Koka, Dhati, Swapanda, Baba, Mesho, and Dadu. He came to America in 1972 and was followed by his wife, Anjali, and young son, Sudipta. Their journey began in Tulsa, Oklahoma and then continued to Hot Springs, Arkansas where Swapan's second son, Sameek, was born. Swapan valued education and completed a master's degree in structural engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Swapan was a nuclear power plant civil engineer and this career led his family through many adventures across the United States. In addition to Oklahoma and Arkansas, the family lived in Louisiana, Illinois, New Jersey, Texas, Tennessee, and Florida before settling in Columbus, Ohio.

Swapan will be dearly missed by his extended community of family and friends across the United States and in India. Swapan would truly do anything for this community and later became a father figure to many of the younger Bengali families in Columbus. Swapan was known for his big personality, large sense of humor and generosity – he truly lit up a room with his sense of humor and passion for life.

Swapan and Anjali found each other 56 years ago in 1965, breaking Indian traditions by forming a love marriage rather than a traditional, arranged marriage. Swapan was proud of his two sons, Sudipta and Sameek. Sudipta received his bachelor's degree and Medical Doctor degree at Northwestern University and is now the Director of Interventional Neuroradiology at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Sameek received his Medical Doctor and PhD degrees from The Ohio State University and is a medical oncologist conducting research in precision cancer medicine. Swapan was also very proud of his two daughters in-law, Neelu Agrawal and Jennifer Bush, for their loving natures and careers.

Swapan was blessed with four grandchildren. He and Anjali watched his two older grandchildren, Elina and Deven, grow into wonderful young adults. And in the last few years he enjoyed playing with his two youngest grandchildren, Mira Isabel and Sarina Anjali. Swapan leaves behind a beautiful legacy with his loving wife Anjali, two sons and four grandchildren.
