Sylvia "Rose" Urfer (79) left this earthly realm December 8,2022 after a short battle with pancreatic
cancer. She passed surrounded by her three loving daughters at her home. It would be wrong to say that
Rose lost her battle because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she was always
determined. When anyone else would have broken Rose stayed strong. Through her, we know what
resilience and perseverance truly look like. There was no quit in Rose. Just because she is no longer here,
it does not mean she lost her fight.
Rose was born March 30, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio to William and Francis (Mason) Hodge, she was the
third of five children. Rose was baptized Catholic and graduated from Holy Family High School, class of
1961. Rose married her high school sweetheart Tom in 1960 and they had two daughters together. After
their divorce, Rose married the love of her life, the late Henry Urfer, and they had a son and daughter.
Rose and Henry were married for 50 years when Henry passed. Rose had many employment
opportunities during her lifetime but her two favorites were Para Mutual at Beulah Park Racetrack and
being a caregiver to the developmentally disabled. Rose enjoyed many things in life and if she enjoyed it,
she excelled at it. Some of the things she enjoyed included dancing, card games, especially poker, and
drawing. Unfortunately, her artistic abilities skipped a generation but was picked back up by her
grandchildren. Rose always said that she would never fly, but she did for the first time in August of 2020
and loved it! When she became widowed, she began traveling between her three daughters' and
granddaughter's homes which lovingly was called, "the Mom Swap" (her sense of humor must have
rubbed off on them at least a little). Eventually her permanent home was with youngest daughter Jewell
who was also her caregiver.
In addition to her parents, Rose was predeceased by her husband Henry Urfer, son Russell Allen Urfer,
brothers James and Phillip Hodge and three nephews. Rose is survived by daughters: Phyllis (Gary)
Mudrak of Bethesda, Connie (Nick) Haussman of Cincinnati, Jewell (James) Carey, and Tina Urfer.
Grandchildren: Tony (Amanda) Whittaker, Don (Mary) Whittaker, Taylor (Alex) Batstone of Topeka,
Kansas, Ryan Urfer of Grove City, and Russell Haussman of Cincinnati. Nine great grandchildren, with her
youngest Colson Batstone being her special little Buddy. Rose is also survived by her two younger sisters
Rita Marshall and Margret "Peg" (Lowell) Graham, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are being overseen by Newcomer Funeral Home, Grove City Chapel on December
13,2022. Visitation for family starts at 11am with friends being welcome at 12pm. Service will be held at
1:00pm. A burial will be held later at the convenience of the family at Grove City Cemetery.
