Vernon O. Rogers

December 30, 1925 — August 13, 2022

Vernon Ostevious Rogers, born December 30, 1925, departed this life on August 13, 2022. He was the oldest of eight children born to Samuel and Mary Frances (Mack) Rogers in Middletown, Ohio. Vernon was educated in the Middletown Public School System, graduating from Middletown High School in June of 1944. After graduation Vernon joined the U.S. Army and was later transferred to the Air Force. He served his country faithfully from 1945 to1948, and was honorably discharge for his service in November of 1948.

In September of 1949, Vernon enrolled at The Ohio State University where he majored in Mechanical Engineering and took advantage of the G.I. Bill. While attending Ohio State, Vernon met Allena Britt (also a student). They began a courtship, culminating in marriage on September 20, 1952. Both Vernon and Allena continued their education together at Ohio State, and eventually settled in Columbus, Ohio where they began the next phase of their life together. The couple gave birth to their first child, Vernon Phillip Rogers in June of 1956. Followed by Daryl Laymon Rogers in October of 1958, Kevin Athony Rogers in May of 1961.

Vernon began his professional career in 1955 at North American Rockwell Aviation where he worked as an Aerospace Engineer. He later retired from Boeing International in 1995, following an expansive career in the aerospace industry that included Lockheed Martin, Marietta GA., and McDonald Douglas, St. Louis, MO.

Known for his quiet, gentle, and reserve disposition. His high moral character, and his dry sense of humor, Vernon was loved, admired and respected by all who knew him. In 1958, he joined St. Philip Episcopal Church in Columbus, Ohio. He was an active participant in the planning and development of the "new edifice" built in 1961, currently located at 166 Woodland Avenue. Vernon served in several ministries including The Episcopal Church Men, Church Vestry, and Food Pantry. He also taught Sunday school and served as Junior Warden for two consecutive terms. Most of all, Vernon enjoyed helping others and giving back to his community whenever possible.
