William "Bill" P. Johnson, age 86, of Columbus, OH, passed away June 9, 2013 peacefully at home. Bill is survived by daughter, Heidi, son (in-law) Tim, and special granddaughter, Tabbi Erb of Westerville, OH; brothers-in-law, Kurt (Margo) King of Edina, MN and Keith (Marilyn) King of Mounds View, MN; sister, Willa Peterson of Sparks, NV; several nieces, nephews, and loving friends; son, Doug (Mollie) Johnson of Ruby, SC; grandchildren, Bonnie, Daniel, Sarah, Isabella Johnson;. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Karol; parents Olin & Olive Johnson; in-laws Eugene and Irene King; sisters Dorothy Baum & Laura Haagensted.
The former owner of Buckeye Tastee-Freez (1956-1966), he retired from Lazarus (Macys) in 1990, after 24 years of service. Bill was a proud member and supporter of Boy Scouts of America for 76 years serving as Scout, Scout Master, Explorer Leader, Arrowhead Council & District Commissioner and mentor to many. The recipient of many BSA recognitions, he was most proud of his Silver Beaver (Scouting's highest commendation – recognizes the invaluable contributions that outstanding American men and women render to youth) and his God & Country medallion. During his Scouting years, 'Mr. J' guided many Scouts – 65 received the highest ranks (48 Eagle Scouts & 17 Explorer Rangers). After his retirement, Bill went on to work at the BSA Simon Kenton Council Trading Post, retiring for the final time in December 2011. He was a member of Maize Manor United Methodist Church for over 42 years.
Memorial Service to be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Maize Manor UMC, 3901 Maize Rd., Columbus, Oh. 43224. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Bill's memory be given to Boy Scout of America, Simon Kenton Council, Arrowhead District 807 Kinnear Road, Columbus, OH 43212.
